Sauna Arla, traditional public sauna open for more than 90 years in Kallio,Helsinki

Sauna Arla represents the most authentic urban culture in Helsinki. People come together to Arla to spend time together, relax and enjoy a good steam. You can bring your own drinks and food or buy some refreshments and snacks at the desk. The traditional public sauna is always open from Wednesday to Sunday. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the sauna facilities are available for rental by private arrangement.

There is a jolly atmosphere in the spacious sauna and the stunning steam here is unmatched. Over a thousand kilos of rocks in a single-heated heater keep the steam hot from morning until night. The heaters are heated with biogas, four hours before opening the sauna.

Arla’s trademark is its metal wash basins, where you can mix water at your own suitable temperature. On Sundays there is a traditional washer in Arla. While lying on the table, you can just relax while the traditional washer cleans your body from head to toes.

Men and women have their own separate sauna and changing rooms on different floors. Each sauna section has 25  lockers. There is a rotating photo exhibition in the staircase between the floors.

We want to foster a sauna culture for families. Children under the age of 15 are offered free access to Arla.

HISTORY OF ARLA AND PUBLIC SAUNAS

In 1907, There were a total of 49 public saunas and spas in Helsinki. Sauna Arla was founded in 1929 in Kallio at the address Kaarlenkatu 15.

At first, Arla’s public sauna served mainly those moving from the countryside to the city, because after the war there were not enough decent washing facilities in Helsinki and warm water was limited. Common saunas became fewer when bathrooms with showers were built in the apartments. Today there are only a few old public saunas in Finland. Arla is the third oldest open public sauna in Finland and the second oldest in Helsinki.

Natural gas fired stoves were installed in the saunas in 1970.  In 2007, the stoves received a complete refurbishment and they were switched to domestic biogas in 2016. The gas-fired stove provides a good and moist steam and is micro particle free.

Public saunas have gained popularity in the 2000s. Arla’s customer base has changed  as sauna goers are getting younger and not only locals but also tourists have found the sophisticated and the beautiful pearl of Kallio,Arla is especially popular with the Japanese.

The culture of Finnish public saunas and the history and current state of Japanese sento-spa culture are similar both are mostly built in cities, for people who do not have the opportunity to wash at home.

Arla sauna turned 90 years old last year and will be more than happy to advise new visitors on how to use the sauna. The atmosphere at Arla is relaxed and authentic. Phones should be left in cabinets.

GUIDELINES FOR SAUNA ARLA

Welcome to Sauna Arla!

  • Ask if you need help. Our staff, as well as a large number of ARLA’s clients, are experienced sauna users, they are happy to show for example how to use the heater.
  • Save at least an hour for the sauna. Two hours is not too much.
  • At ARLA SAUNA  you can relax and leave the everyday behind. We recommend that you leave your phone in the wardrobe and fully enjoy the  atmosphere.
  • Drink plenty of water or other fluids while in the sauna. Sweating a lot in the sauna and too little hydration can cause nausea and dizziness. Mineral water provides all the salts needed to stay hydrated.
  • Help keep the SAUNA ARLA fresh. Always wash in the shower before going to the steam room. Sit on a towel or seat cover.
  • You can use the sauna naked or use a towel or swimsuit. At SAUNA ARLA most people go to sauna naked in the traditional way.
  • Sit on a bench where you feel good. The upper benches are hotter and the lower benches cooler. The wooden back supports can be moved freely in the sauna.

  • To make steam (LÖYLY) open the upper door of the stove and pour water on the stones with the long-handed steam ladle. After making the steam, close the door of the stove. The sauna water bucket can be filled from the faucet on the sauna wall.
  • It is polite to ask others in the sauna whether they want more steam(LÖYLY).
  • BE CAREFUL – THE HOT WATER VAPOR RISING FROM THE LARGE HEATER CAN EASILY SURPRISE YOU AND CAN BURN! ALSO THE SAUNA STOVE AND OTHER METAL PARTS IN THE SAUNA ARE BURNING HOT.
  • Enjoy sauna at your own pace.Don’t stay in the sauna because others are still bathing.
  • As you cool off, you can enjoy the fresh air in the courtyard benches; and a picnic table is at the disposal of the sauna. Also remember to drink water.
  • Enjoy the sauna and cool down as many times as you like. When you’re done, take a shower.
  • Enjoy the great feeling.

Traditional FINNISH SAUNA WHISKS are for sale at the counter. Put the whisk in the tin bucket found in the bathroom. Soak it in a tin bucket for about half an hour. Whisking will treat your skin and improve blood circulation.

GREETINGS FROM SAUNA ARLA

Traditional public sauna

If you are looking for an authentic Finnish sauna in Helsinki this is the place. Löyly/steam was very good. It takes you back to a time when locals had to use the sauna for their weekly bathing. I am an American but went with some Finnish friends and we all enjoyed our experience.

We paid a visit to the oldest sauna in Helsinki. Children are free. It is very old and there are mostly Finnish people. Very traditional little sauna house in Helsinki.

This is the real Finnish sauna you have always wanted to experience!!

Yes, it is rustic, small, and cozy so don’t expect a luxury spa. This is from a bygone era when Helsinki was once full of public saunas. We paid about 14 euros to get in and you get a wrist band with a key. The wooden lockers are about 3 feet high so all your clothes and towels will fit just fine. It’s best to just go naked, everyone else is, and no one really cares, do leave you inhibitions behind dude !!! The actual sauna is gas operated and the heat is intense. One guy used the loyly with a long metal handle to pour water on the rocks. This made the heat more intense. I sat on the top row and for a while. I used my Russian sauna hat which helps make the heat a little more tolerable. Caution: don’t sit with your back on the tiled wall in back, it’s super hot. Use a wooden back rest. There is only one shower. Just use one of the birch whisks while waiting to rinse off. The courtyard outside in nice. They offer free coffee, water, and cherry tomato treats. We sat outside in our towels and smoked cigars while my brother got some Finnish heavy metal music on his cell phone. The young guy in charge spoke English and was really nice. We were the only Americans and everyone there was Finnish and two other guys were speaking French. So it wasn’t a touristy kind of place.

We were the only tourists there, it was nice

Spent a really lovely afternoon with my sister here. The sauna was excellent, and very kind helpful attendants when we got there. Separate saunas for men and women, shampoo and body wash, even some cherry tomatoes on a table in the locker room.

It was an excellent afternoon after a cold morning walking around the city.
